January 7th, 2008 Richie Coy opens the 2009 Pre-Season with a win in the Earthscapes 200! - By Charli Brown
2008 Whelen Modified Online Tour Overall Champion Richie Coy picked up where
he left off by winning the Earthscapes 200 Wednesday night at the North Wilkesboro Speedway.
North Wilkesboro, NC -
Haskell, New Jersey's Richie Coy started off the 2009 pre-season right
where he left in 2008 as he made another visit to Victory Lane by
winning the Inaugural Earthscapes 200 Wednesday night at the North
Wilkesboro Speedway.
The Earthscapes 200 was the very first time
drivers had the opportunity to race for prize money thanks to long time
SIModified.com supporter Keith Joseph and his Lockport, New York based
landscaping company, Earthscapes.
"I wanted to give the guys who
have supported the racing leagues and the website a chance to have a
special race for a little bit of prize money" explained Joseph.
"Richie, Charli and the rest of the guys here have done a fantastic job
with everything they do and I wanted to do something special for
them in return."
Coming off a difficult couple months off in
2008, Charlotte, North Carolina's Charli Brown set fast time in his
Nitroade sponsored #58 with a lap time of 19.807 seconds at 114.504
MPH. Many folks up and down pit road knew this would be Brown's last
start aboard this machine as it was a tribute to his late father and
his famous metallic brown 1972 Monte Carlo.
Brown would get the
early jump on outside pole sitter Chuck Darling and lead a race high 81
laps before coming in contact with JD Laird on a late race restart
while trying to retake the lead. Laird was on old tires and could not
hold his car down on the bottom lane and sent the race's dominant car
up and into the outside wall in turn one.
As Brown lost a lap in
the pits making repairs, Richie Coy inherited the lead and went on to
win over 2008 SIModified.com "Rookie of the Year" Bobby Ambroceo and
2008 True Value/Dart Machinery Modified Series Overall champion, Zach
Truesdail. Brown charged back to fourth with Chris Rogers rounding out
the top five.
"Sometimes, having the fastest car doesn't always
mean you're going to win" explained a jubilant Richie Coy in Victory
Lane. "I could see Charli closing in during that final run, but there
was no point in racing him just to keep him a lap down. We were close
enough to the finish where I knew I could let him pass me and not lose
any ground over Bobby. I want to thank Keith Joseph for doing this for
us. This felt like a big race and I think the car count proved that.
I'm just disappointed I didn't get to race Charli for the win, because
he definately had the fastest car tonight."
Bobby Ambroceo took
home the KING Design Halfway Leader Award, while Richie Coy took home
the Powerade "Power Move of the Race" Award for improving 17 positions
from his starting position at the tail end of the field.
The
2009 SIModified.com pre-season will crank up again at the New Smyrna
Speedway in Samsula, Florida on February 11th and 13th as the Whelen
Modifieds head to Florida for Speedweeks.
The John Blewett, III
Memorial 100 will be an open competition event for anyone who wishes to
post an entry, while the Richie Evans Memorial 100 on Friday night will
be the last pre-season event before the 2009 Whelen Modified Online
Tour heads to the Caraway Speedway to officially open the 2009 racing
season.
