Richie Coy wins the Richie Evans Memorial 100 at New Smyrna!
 - By Charli Brown

Haskell, New Jersey's Richie Coy bounced back from a mid-race tangle for the lead to win the Richie Evans Memorial 100 at New Smyrna Speedway, Friday night.

Samsula, FL -
Haskell, New Jersey's Richie Coy bounced back from a mid-race tangle for the lead to win the Richie Evans Memorial 100 Friday night at the New Smyrna Speedway.

Wednesday night's winner Tony Hanbury set fast time to win the NPGPro.com Pole Award with a lap time of 16.319 seconds at 110.300 Miles Per Hour. Charli Brown was second fastest after sitting out the entire practice session with transmission troubles followed by Chris O'Shell, Richie Coy and Mike Whiting.

Tony Hanbury and Charli Brown led the field to the green flag with Brown getting the early jump and he cleared Hanbry's Kolba Construction machine as the field raced off turn two and down the backstretch.

For the second straight year, Brown dominated the early stages of the event and took home the KING Design Halfway Leader Award on lap 50 over Richie Coy, Tony Hanbury, Mike Whiting and Rick Dutra.

But the complexion of the race changed dramatically on a late race restart on lap 68.

Richie Coy got the jump on the leader on the outside lane and as they raced to turn one, Brown's Shark Lounge machine came in contact with the left rear nerf bar of Coy's brand new Stewart's Root Beer Troyer chassis car, sending him for a spin at the top of turns one and two. SIModified officials called Brown's white number one to pit road for aggressive driving, sending him to the rear of the field.

This handed the lead to Tony Hanbury who was riding a close third behind the leaders through a series of successive restarts. Richie Coy's championship pit crew surveyed the damage and sent the defending Whelen Modified Online Tour champion back out in fifth spot for the restart on lap 74.

The race's biggest incident took place on this restart as outside pole sitter Rick Dutra and Todd Taylor got together as they raced to turn one. Both cars pulled away with Taylor's machine getting the worst end of it with motor damage. Tony Hanbury hit pit road for his final pit stop of the night, which handed the lead back to Richie Coy.

Coy led the rest of the way to win over Chris O'Shell, Tony Hanbury, Mike House and Charli Brown. Sixth through tenth were Mike Whiting, Rick Dutra, Todd Taylor, AJ Griffin and JD Laird.

"This is a great way to break in a brand new race car!" exclaimed the race winner. "We really didn't get a chance to see the new car's full potential Wednesday night, but I'm positive we'll be just as strong this year as we were with last year's cars."

This concludes the schedule of pre-season events for the SIModified.com Online Racing Leagues. While the Whelen Modified Online Tour has gone to an "Invitation Only" format this year, look for news about the Earthscapes SK/SST Modified Division for folks looking to race here at SIModified.com in the coming weeks.

The Whelen Modified Online Tour kicks off it's 2009 season Thursday night, March 12th at the Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina.
