Richie Coy opens the 2009 season with a win in the Whelen Spring Classic 100 at Caraway!
 - By Charli Brown

Defending Whelen Modified Online Tour champion Richie Coy continued his dominance with a win Thursday night in the Whelen Spring Classic 100 at Caraway Speedway.

Sophia, NC -
Haskell, New Jersey's Richie Coy capitalized on a late race tangle between the race leaders on a restart to cruise to his first points paying win of the 2009 season Thursday night in the Whelen Spring Classic 100 at the Caraway Speedway.

Chris O'Shell unveiled a brand new Toyota Camry and quickly set the fastest time in qualifying to win the first NPGPro.com Pole Award of 2009 with a lap time of 15.801 seconds at 103.664 MPH. Second fastest was Charli Brown with Richie Coy, Rex Hoyle and Joe Doiron rounding out the top five.

At the start of the race, Charli Brown quickly got a jump on pole sitter Chris O'Shell and led the first lap before SIModified.com officials declared the jump was too big and black flagged the number one machine for a stop and go penalty.

O'Shell inherited the lead and dominated the early stages of the event to the KING Design Halfway Leader Award on Lap 50 over Joe Doiron, Rex Hoyle, Richie Coy and Tony Hanbury. Sixth through tenth were Charli Brown, Keith Joseph, Mike House, Jeff Marble and Zach Truesdail.

A hard charging Charli Brown clawed his way back into the top five but a plume of steam erupted from the Charlotte Checkers machine just after passing Tony Hanbury and completing lap 60.

Only the top five cars were on the lead lap when the caution came out at lap 75 for Mike Whiting and Keith Joseph getting together in turn two to bring out the race's third caution. All of the leaders hit pit road for service with the exception of race leader Chris O'Shell, who must have suffered from communication problems as he stayed out only to pit the following lap.

Rex Hoyle won the race off pit road with a two tire pit stop but suffered contact on the next restart with Joe Doiron while racing for the lead. This opened the door for Richie Coy who led his first laps of the night on the following restart after Rex Hoyle and Chris O'Shell got together coming out of turn two.

Richie Coy would lead the rest of the way to the double Sunoco checkered flags over Tony Hanbury, Zach Truesdail, Joe Doiron and Keith Joseph. Scott Bryant made his return to SIModified.com competition to come home sixth over Chris O'Shell, Mike House, Rick Dutra and Chris Rogers.

"Man, I had to earn this one tonight!" exclaimed an excited Richie Coy in Victory Lane. "Chris (O'Shell) was the man to beat and I was just riding behind him and Joe (Doiron) hoping we'd get our chance to sneak past them if something happened."

"We're just lucky it did and we were able to take advantage of it. I've got to thank my whole team for putting together two brand new race cars for this year. The guys weren't too excited about switching over to Troyer cars after all the success we've had so I hope they're sold on the idea now."

Chris O'Shell took home a majority of the post race awards, winning the NPGPro.com Pole Award, The KING Design Halfway Leader Award and the newly titled Fastech Race Car Bodies Fastest Lap of the Race.

Zach Truesdail earned the Powerade "Power Move of the Race" Award for his drive from the fourteenth starting position to come home third.

Next week, the Whelen Modified Online Tour heads to the Concord Motorsport Park in Midland, North Carolina for the Capital Bank 100.
