March 19th, 2009 Richie Coy goes back to back, wins the Capital Bank 100 at Concord! - By Charli Brown
Richie
Coy became the first repeat winner of 2009 as he held off a hard
charging Rex Hoyle to win the Capital Bank 100 at Concord Speedway,
Thursday night.
Concord, NC - Richie
Coy held off a late race charge from Rex Hoyle to win his second
straight Whelen Modified Online Tour feature event Thursday night in
the Capital Bank 100 at Concord Speedway.
Walpole,
Massachusetts’ Bobby Ambroceo set fast time to win his first
NPGPro.com Pole Award of 2009 with a lap time of 15.154 seconds at
118.781 Miles Per Hour over Chris O’Shell, Charli Brown, Rex
Hoyle and Joe Doiron who rounded out the top five.
The 2008
SIModified.com “Rookie of the Year” led the field to
the green flag with Charli Brown quickly sneaking past Chris
O’Shell as the field raced to turn one. Ambroceo would lead the
early stages of the event and survive a close call with Charli Brown
who was racing to his outside for the lead on a restart on lap 11. Brown’s
grinding crash in the dogleg collected the third place car of Chris
O’Shell and ended both of the drivers’ night early. Current
point leader Richie Coy was also involved, but drove away with no
damage after spinning to avoid the incident.
Berwick,
Maine’s Joe Doiron would wage a two lap, side-by-side battle with
Bobby Ambroceo on the following restart before taking the top spot on
lap 18. Doiron continued to lead to the KING Design Halfway Leader lap
over Richie Coy (who picked up valuable track position with a two tire
pit stop on lap 30) Tony Hanbury, Zach Truesdail and Rex Hoyle. Sixth
through tenth were Bobby Ambroceo, Keith Joseph, JD Laird, AJ Griffin
and Mike Whiting.
Joe Doiron and Richie Coy battled for the lead
with a thrilling side-by-side race with Coy’s Stewart’s
Root Beer machine finally taking command on lap 56 and led to the
race’s fourth caution for a spin by Chris Rogers on turn three.
The
Concord Speedway lends itself to high speeds and scary wrecks and the
following restart would prove this to be a fact. Third place driver Joe
Doiron was looking for a spot inside Tony Hanbury as the field raced to
turn three on the following restart with Doiron’s TS Haulers
machine slightly tapping Tony Hanbury’s left rear nerf bar as the
two entered the corner. Several drivers were also involved in the
wreck including JD Laird, Mike House and Scott Bryant. Everyone would
drive away except for JD Laird, who had to be towed back to pit road
after ending up on his roof at the bottom of the race track. Quick pit
work by Laird’s team got him back out to finish the event.
This
put the race’s pole sitter Bobby Ambroceo right behind race
leader Richie Coy for the remaining 30 laps. Coy fought off a hard
challenge from Ambroceo for several laps until Rex Hoyle made his way
into the second spot on lap 78.
The 2007 Whelen Modified Online Tour
Summer Season champion set his sights on the current champion and point
leader and with just 15 laps to go, the top three cars were nose to
tail for the lead. Hoyle and Ambroceo were both on fresher Hoosier
tires, while race leader Richie Coy had only taken two right side tires
earlier in the race.
With just five laps to go it was a two-man
race with Rex Hoyle right in the tire tracks of the race leader as they
closed in on lapped traffic, but a final late race caution ended the
race behind the Chevrolet pace car.
Richie Coy came home for his
second straight win over Rex Hoyle, Bobby Ambroceo, Zach Truesdail and
Tony Hanbury. Sixth through tenth were Joe Doiron, AJ Griffin, Mike
Whiting, Dennis Frates and Mike House.
Coy also won the Powerade
“Power Move of the Race” Award for his charge from the
seventeenth starting position while also winning the Mends Image Most
Laps Led Award. Joe Doiron won the Fastech Race Car Bodies
“Fastest Lap of the Race” Award and Rex Hoyle took home the
Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award. Chris O’Shell received the Hoosier “Hard Luck” Award.
Next week, the
Whelen Modified Online Tour heads to the Ace Speedway in Altamahaw,
North Carolina for the Adams Towing and Recovery 100. Richie Coy holds
the early point lead by 35 points over Tony Hanbury, Zach Truesdail,
Joe Doiron and Rex Hoyle.
