March 26th, 2009 Joe Doiron cashes in
at Ace, wins the Lightnin' Fast 100! -
By Charli Brown
Joe Doiron
held off Chris Rogers to win his first Whelen Modified Online Tour event at the
Lightnin' Fast 100 at Ace Speedway, Thursday
night.
Altamahaw, NC - Berwick, Maine's Joe
Doiron took advantage of an early race pit stop and held off Chris Rogers to win
the Lightnin' Fast 100 Thursday night at the Ace Speedway.
Chris O'Shell
took home his second NPGPro.com Pole Award of the year with a lap time of 15.215
seconds at 94.643 Miles Per Hour. Chris Rogers was second fastest followed by
Charli Brown, Joe Doiron and Mike Whiting.
At the drop of the green flag,
Chris O'Shell led the field to turn one and traded the race lead with Charli
Brown through a series of early restarts. There were several early cautions due
to the tight confines of the 4/10ths mile oval's tight corners and high-speed
straightaways.
O'Shell's silver TRD Toyota Camry was the dominant car as
he led to the KING Design Halfway Leader
Award on lap 50 over Chris Rogers, Charli Brown, Zach Truesdail and Tony
Hanbury. Sixth through tenth were Keith Joseph, Dennis Frates, Joe Doiron, Rex
Hoyle and Richie Coy.
Twenty laps later, the final lead change of the
night occurred under caution at lap 70 as Chris O'Shell headed to pit road for
service and handed the lead to Joe Doiron. Doiron had pitted earlier in the
event on lap 26 and had worked his way back to the front.
O'Shell
rejoined the field in 11th spot for the restart on lap 74 but could only work
his way back to the sixth spot as he raced with Zach Truesdail and a hard
charging Tony Hanbury.
Joe Doiron led the field under the double Sunoco
checkered flags to win by four car lengths over Chris Rogers, Keith Joseph, Rex
Hoyle and Richie Coy. Sixth through tenth were Zach Truesdail, Chris O'Shell,
Tony Hanbury, AJ Griffin and Mike House.
In Victory Lane, Doiron cashed
in on the Mach-1 Performance bounty that Richie Coy and his sponsors put up for
any driver that could beat him. Doiron quickly donated it back to the pot to
keep the excitement going amongst the competitors.
"This was a tough
little race track and it wasn't easy getting back to the front,” explained Joe
Doiron in Victory Lane. "I want to thank Richie and Mach-1 for doing this bounty
idea, but all of us have been talking about it and I don't want to be the bad
guy and spoil it by taking it the first week they've offered it" he
laughed.
Richie Coy earned the Powerade "Power Move of the Race" Award
for his drive to the fifth position from his eighteenth starting spot while
Chris O'Shell took home a majority of the post race awards including the
Featherlite "Most Improved Driver," The Fastech Race Car Bodies "Fastest Lap of
the Race" and the Mends Image "Most Laps Led" Award. Charli Brown received the
Hoosier "Hard Luck" Award.
Next week, the Whelen Modified Online Tour
returns to the historic Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, South
Carolina for the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 100. Current Whelen Modified Online
Tour point leader Richie Coy is the race's defending winner and holds a slim
25-point lead over Joe Doiron, Zach Truesdail, Tony Hanbury and Rex Hoyle.
