 - SIModified PR

Charli Brown broke through for his first win of 2009 as he led the final 60 laps to win the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 100 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Thursday night.

Greenville, SC -
Charlotte, North Carolina's Charli Brown broke through for his first win of the 2009 Whelen Modified Online Tour season as he led the final 60 laps to win the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 100 at the historic Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, South Carolina, Thursday night.

Richie Coy unveiled a brand new Stewart's Grape Soda paint scheme and quickly put it on the NPGPro.com Pole with a lap time of 19.342 seconds at 97.156 Miles Per Hour. Charli Brown posted the second fastest time with Chris O'Shell, Mike Whiting and Bobby Ambroceo rounding out the top five.

Coy would get the early jump heading into turn one and lead to the race's second caution on lap 23 for JD Laird and Keith Joseph getting together in turn four.

Drivers knew that tire wear would be an issue and Richie Coy led the top eight cars including Charli Brown, Chris O'Shell, Bobby Ambroceo, Rex Hoyle, Zach Truesdail, Mike Whiting and Tony Hanbury to pit road as the ninth place car of Mike House stayed out behind the Chevrolet pace car. Tony Hanbury would lose the most positions under this caution as he got together with AJ Griffin and suffered damage on pit road after hitting the front stretch pit wall.

Coy would win the race off pit road followed by Charli Brown, Chris O'Shell, Bobby Ambroceo and Rex Hoyle as Mike House and Chris Rogers led the field to the restart on lap 28. The cars with fresher tires immediately worked their way past the second place car of Chris Rogers who slid high into the marbles in turn one with Richie Coy slipping past as Charli Brown and Chris O'Shell stacked them three abreast coming off turn two and down the backstretch. Chris Rogers would spin his machine in front of the fifth place car of Bobby Ambroceo to bring out the race's third caution on lap 30.

Mike House led the field to the restart on lap 34 with Richie Coy to his outside but as they raced to turn one, Coy also slipped high up into the marbles as Charli Brown and Chris O'Shell sped past as they raced off turn two. Bobby Ambroceo took advantage of Coy's mistake to move into the fourth spot as they completed lap 35.

The race's final lead change of the night came on the restart on lap 40 as Charli Brown worked the high lane past Mike House heading into turn one. Bobby Ambroceo followed Brown past Mike House's machine into second with Chris O'Shell dropping back to fourth with Rex Hoyle and Mike Whiting battling for the fifth and sixth spot.

Ten laps later Charli Brown led to the KING Design Halfway Leader Award on lap 50 over Chris O'Shell, Bobby Ambroceo, Rex Hoyle and Mike Whiting. Scott Bryant moved into the sixth spot followed by Keith Joseph, Chris Rogers, Tony Hanbury and Joe Doiron.

Current Whelen Modified Online Tour point leader Richie Coy continued to struggle as he dropped back to the 13th position in his Stewart's Grape Soda machine but the cautions were working to his favor as he continued to climb back into contention and by lap 68 had moved into the eighth spot. Coy raced with Mike Whiting for the sixth position on the backstretch on lap 68 when the two cars tangled together and blocked the race track in turn three with a big wreck that included current point leaders Coy, Zach Truesdail, Tony Hanbury, Joe Doiron as well as Keith Joseph, Rick Dutra and Mike Whiting.

Charli Brown continued to lead over Chris O'Shell, Bobby Ambroceo, Rex Hoyle and Scott Bryant. Richie Coy had worked his way back into the sixth position and began reeling in the leaders while taking advantage of fresher tires.

With just five laps to go, Brown slowly began to pull away from O'Shell and Ambroceo as Richie Coy got to the back bumper of Scott Bryant's black #60 machine. Bobby Ambroceo dove to the inside of Chris O'Shell for second with Rex Hoyle, Scott Bryant and Richie Coy all nose to tail for the top six positions.

Rex Hoyle got into the back of Chris O'Shell and spun his Diet Pepsi Mustang off turn two with just two laps to go. As O'Shell and Scott Bryant sped past, Richie Coy had nowhere to go but to spin his machine as Rex Hoyle did a masterful 360 spin to get pointed in the right direction to race back to the caution flag. Richie Coy came to a rest with the nose of his machine against the inside concrete wall, but also hustled back to the caution flag.

Charli Brown would flash under the yellow and checkered flags for his first win of 2009 over Bobby Ambroceo, Chris O'Shell, Scott Bryant and JD Laird. Sixth through tenth were AJ Griffin, Mike House, Richie Coy, Tony Hanbury and Rex Hoyle who was put to the tail of the lead lap cars for the last caution.

In victory lane, an ecstatic Charli Brown leaped onto the roof of his Charlotte Checkers machine and waved the Sunoco checkered flag.

“This one’s for James (car designer James Fritz) and all my crew guys who’ve rebuilt this car after I destroyed the rear clip last week at Ace” said Brown. “This whole year has been rough on us by signing a last minute sponsor, blowing a motor and destroying two brand new race cars. We’re definitely still behind right now, but we’ve just got to keep digging to get ourselves back in contention. It’s going to be a long year,” he explained.

Brown took home the Mends Image Most laps Led Award, while JD Laird won the Powerade “Power Move of the Race” Award for his drive from the eighteenth starting spot to come home fifth. Scott Bryant took home the Featherlite “Most Improved Driver Award” after having made the biggest improvement from last week’s event. Richie Coy won the Fastech Race Car Bodies “Fastest Lap of the Race Award” and Mike Whiting received the Hoosier “Hard Luck Award.”

Next week, the Whelen Modified Online Tour returns to the South Boston Speedway for the Strutmasters.com 100. Richie Coy still holds the point lead by 51 points over Joe Doiron, Tony Hanbury, Zach Truesdail and Rex Hoyle.
