April 9th, 2009 Richie Coy returns to victory lane by winning the Strutmasters.com 100 at South Boston! - by Charli Brown
Richie
Coy returned to his winning ways as he held off a late race charge from
JD Laird to win the Strutmasters.com 100 at the South Boston Speedway,
Thursday night.
South Boston, VA - Haskell,
New Jersey's Richie Coy returned to victory lane Thursday night as he
held off a hard charging JD Laird in the closing laps to win the
Strutmasters.com 100 at the South Boston Speedway.
Coy started
off his night by setting fast time in qualifying to win his second
NPGPro.com Pole Award with a lap time of 14.574 seconds at 98.806 Miles
Per Hour. Tim Jordan made his first appearance of the new season in his
Concrete Express #47 machine, but was found to be too light in post
qualifying inspection, thus moving him to the rear of the field. This
would move Mike House to second with Scott Bryant, Rick Dutra and Keith
Joseph rounding out the top five.
At the drop of the green flag,
Richie Coy jumped out to lead the first five laps before Keith Joseph
and Mike House got together in turn one to bring out the night's first
caution.
Sixth place starter Mike Whiting lost several positions
on the first lap after getting loose in turn three and slid up the race
track as the field raced by. Charli Brown would receive the free pass
after getting collected in the same incident after contact from Ryan
Curran sent him spinning into the inside wall on the front stretch.
By
lap 25, SIModified rookie Cory Riley was making his presence known in
his Lance Snacks machine as he moved to the second spot behind race
leader Richie Coy. Scott Bryant was third, followed by Bobby Ambroceo
and AJ Griffin.
The race's fourth caution came out just four
laps later for Keith Joseph spinning his Earthscapes #26 hard into the
turn two barriers on lap 29. Charli Brown, JD Laird, Tim Jordan, Rich
Warden and Ryan Curran all hit pit road for service as several drivers
began planning their pit strategies.
Richie Coy gave up the lead
after hitting pit road under the next caution on lap 36 for contact
between Scott Bryant and AJ Griffin, who were racing for the fourth and
fifth positions in turn three. A majority of the cars behind them had
no place to go and the track was blocked in turn four as drivers tried
to sort out their positions coming to the caution.
This gave the
lead to Corey Riley who stayed out while the rest of the leaders behind
him all pitted for service. Richie Coy won the race off pit road and
lined up next to the rookie for the restart on lap 40. Coy worked the
bottom groove and retook the lead on lap 42 and led to the KING Design
Halfway Leader lap on lap 50. Riley continued to hold onto second over
Charli Brown (whose earlier pit strategy moved him past all the cars
that pitted on the previous caution) AJ Griffin and Mike House. Sixth
through tenth were Tim Jordan, Rich Warden, Bobby Ambroceo, Rick Dutra
and Ryan Curran.
Corey Riley pitted from the second position
under caution on lap 62 for JD Laird and Rick Dutra who got together in
turns three and four. Both cars drove away and pitted to check over
their cars.
Richie Coy led the single file restart on lap 65
over Charli Brown, AJ Griffin, Mike House and Ryan Curran. Sixth
through tenth were Rick Dutra, Rich Warden, Tim Jordan, Corey Riley,
Bobby Ambroceo.
JD Laird and Corey Riley quickly started carving
their way to the front on fresh tires as the two worked through traffic
and by lap 80 were running in the fifth and sixth positions
respectively.
Charli Brown briefly took the lead for a lap
before waving Coy past as he struggled with a miss in his engine. Laird
and Riley continued to charge their way forward as JD Laird caught the
second place car of Charli Brown on lap 88. Brown's fading machine
yielded the third spot to Cory Riley on lap 92 as JD Laird chased down
Coy for the lead.
Laird would get to Coy's back bumper but ran
out of laps as the two flashed under the double Sunoco checkered flags
less than 2/10ths of a second apart! Corey Riley made an impressive
debut to come home third with AJ Griffin and Charli Brown holding on
for fifth. Mike House took home the sixth spot over Rick Dutra, Ryan
Curran, Rich Warden and Bobby Ambroceo.
Richie Coy took home the
majority of the post race awards including the NPGPro.com Pole Award,
The KING Design Halfway leader and the Mends Image Most Laps Led Award.
JD Laird earned the Powerade "Power Move of the Race" Award for his
drive from the fourteenth starting position. Ryan Curran won the
Featherlite "Most Improved Driver" Award for improving his finishing
position from the previous week's event. Corey Riley set the Fastech
Race Car Bodies "Fastest Lap of the Race" while Tim Jordan received the
Hoosier "Hard Luck" Award.
Next week, the Whelen Modified Online
Tour heads to the Thompson Speedway for the "Icebreaker 100." Richie
Coy holds an impressive 141 point lead over Mike House, Bobby Ambroceo,
AJ Griffin and Charli Brown.
