April 16th, 2009 Chris O'Shell
survives a wild finish to win the "Icebreaker 100" at
Thompson! - by Charli Brown
Chris
O'Shell narrowly missed a late race tangle between Richie Coy and Tony Hanbury
to win the "Icebreaker 100" at the Thompson Speedway, Thursday
night.
Thompson, CT - Cornelius, North
Carolina's Chris O'Shell narrowly missed a late race tangle between Richie Coy
and Tony Hanbury to break through for his first win of the 2009 season at the
"Icebreaker 100" at the Thompson Speedway, Thursday night.
Hometown hero
Bobby Ambroceo from Walpole, Massachusetts set fast time to win his second
NPGPro.com Pole Award with a lap time of 19.965 seconds at 112.697 Miles Per
Hour. Tony Hanbury was second quick, followed by Chris Rogers, Richie Coy and
Charli Brown.
At the drop of the green flag, Bobby Ambroceo raced outside
pole sitter Tony Hanbury to turn one and took the lead as the field headed down
the backstretch. Ambroceo led to the race's first caution on lap 31 for Charli
Brown as he smacked the crossover gate in turn two and collected newcomer Justin
Strumpf as the two cars spun into the backstretch grass.
All the leaders
pitted under this caution with Bobby Ambroceo leading over Tony Hanbury, Chris
O'Shell, Chris Rogers and Scott Bryant. Sixth through tenth were Richard
Davidowitz, Richie Coy, Chuck Darling, Corey Riley and Tim Jordan.
Tony
Hanbury would win the race off pit road and lead the field to the restart on lap
37. Thirteen laps later, Hanbury led to the KING
Design Halfway Leader lap on lap 50 over Bobby Ambroceo, Chris Rogers,
Richard Davidowitz and Richie Coy. Sixth through tenth were Scott Bryant, Chuck
Darling, Chris O'Shell, Tim Jordan and another newcomer making his first start,
Matthew Wells.
Ryan Curran brought out the race's second caution on lap
63 as he spun his Skoal Bandit sponsored machine off turn four as the leaders
began to close in. Second place driver Bobby Ambroceo took to the grass to miss
Curran's spinning machine as the rest of the leaders checked up and took evasive
action.
Tony Hanbury, Richie Coy, Scott Bryant, Chuck Darling, Chris
O'Shell, Charli Brown, Rick Dutra and Corey Riley all pitted under this caution
with Hanbury's Kolba Construction team getting the race leader off pit road
first and behind Richard Davidowitz, who stayed out behind the Chevrolet Monte
Carlo pace car.
Richard Davidowitz and Tony Hanbury led the field to the
restart on lap 71 and as the two leaders crossed the start-finish line, rubbed
nerf bars that sent sparks flying and Davidowitz spinning sideways through the
infield grass towards pit road before doing a masterful save and rejoin the
field in 14th spot as the last car on the lead lap.
Matthew Wells and Tim
Jordan got together as they were racing for the fifth and sixth position in turn
one with Wells' Midwest Fasteners machine spinning to bring out the race's third
caution on lap 72.
Tony Hanbury continued to lead over Richie Coy, Chris
O'Shell, Scott Bryant and Rick Dutra. Sixth through tenth were Keith Joseph,
Charli Brown, Corey Riley, Justin Strumpf and Richard Davidowitz as the field
came to the restart on lap 78. Current point leader Richie Coy cleared Tony
Hanbury for the lead in turn one and led to the race's fourth caution for Ryan
Curran's second spin of the night in turn three on lap 80.
As Curran
headed behind the pit wall, the field lined up for what would be the race's
turning point on a lap 86 restart. Richie Coy and Tony Hanbury raced wheel to
wheel to turn one with Coy on the bottom and Hanbury upstairs. As Coy headed to
the bottom lane his car turned hard right into Hanbury's machine and sent him up
on to the flat area just off the racing surface.
Meanwhile, Richie Coy
had a handful of steering wheel as he was trying to save his Stewart's Root Beer
machine from a big slide off turn two. The third place car of Chris O'Shell dove
to the bottom and barely missed Coy's machine as Charli Brown made the same move
up and into the second spot. Richard Davidowitz had worked his way back up into
the seventh spot and worked the high lane past Coy's machine and passed Scott
Bryant as he checked up to avoid the incident in turn two. This shook up the
rest of the field as Rick Dutra checked up for Bryant and was hit from behind by
Justin Strumpf and Keith Joseph.
The race's final restart came to the
line with just eight laps to go on lap 92. Chris O'Shell led over Charli Brown,
Richard Davidowitz, Corey Riley and Scott Bryant. Brown chased O'Shell's silver
Toyota for the lead until Davidowitz dove to the inside of Brown's fading
machine in turn three with just three laps to go. As Davidowitz set off after
the leader, Brown had his mirror full of rookie Corey Riley's orange Lance
Snacks machine as they battled for the third spot.
But Davidowitz would
run out of time as Chris O'Shell cruised under the double Sunoco checkered flags
by two car lengths over Richard Davidowitz, Charli Brown, Corey Riley and Scott
Bryant. Sixth through tenth were Richie Coy, Justin Strumpf, Matthew Wells,
Chris Rogers and Bobby Ambroceo.
"Finally!" Chris O'Shell shouted as he
climbed out of his silver TRD Camry. "I can't thank these guys enough. We've
been fast every week with this new car and the TRD guys have been giving me some
awesome power under the hood. When I came off of two up there and missed Richie,
I just couldn't believe it! I'm glad we've finally broke through and won one of
these things early enough in the season to build some momentum."
Tony
Hanbury won the Mends Image Most Laps Led Award and received the Hoosier Hard
Luck Award. Richard Davidowitz won the Powerade "Power Move of the Race" as well
as setting the Fastech Race Car Bodies Fastest Lap of the Race. Scott Bryant
took home the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award.
Next week, the
Whelen Modified Online Tour returns to the historic Langhorne Speedway for the
first 75 lap race of the year. Richard Davidowtiz and Charli Brown are previous
winners at Langhorne with Davidowitz charging back from the rear of the field in
the race's closing laps last year to win the 100 lap event. Richie Coy now holds
a 139 point lead over new second place driver Charli Brown with Bobby Ambroceo,
Chris O'Shell and Keith Joseph rounding out the top five.
