April 30th, 2009 Richard Davidowitz
wins the Craftsman 100 at Mansfield! -
by Charli Brown
Richard
Davidowitz rebounded from a mid-race tangle for the lead
with Tony
Hanbury to win the
Craftsman 100 at the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway, Thursday
night.
Mansfield, OH - Holbrook,
New York's Richard Davidowitz led the final 25 laps after carving his
way back to the front after a mid-race tangle for the lead with Tony
Hanbury to win the Craftsman 100 Thursday night at the Mansfield
Motorsports Speedway.
Current Whelen Modified Online Tour point
leader Richie Coy won his fourth NPGPro.com Pole Award with a lap time
of 15.304 seconds at 117.616 Miles Per Hour. Bobby Ambroceo was second
fastest followed by Tony Hanbury, Charli Brown and Chris Rogers.
Richie
Coy led the field to the green with Tony Hanbury on the outside pole
with Coy getting the early advantage as the two raced to turn one.
Charli Brown and Bobby Ambroceo raced side by side for the third and
fourth spot in the early stages of the event with Chris Rogers rounding
out the top five.
Tony Hanbury worked the high groove around
Richie Coy and led his first laps of the evening on lap 11. Hanbury
continued to show the way until the first major incident of the race
happened just seven laps later on lap 18.
Charli Brown was
struggling with the handling of his white number one machine all day
long and planted himself in the turn two concrete, collecting Keith
Joseph, Rick Dutra and Mike House as the rest of the field took evasive
action to miss the wreck.
Justin Strumpf and rookie Andrew
Hannula headed to pit road for service under this caution as both
Charli Brown and Keith Joseph retired from the event.
Tony
Hanbury led to the restart on lap 24 over Richie Coy, Bobby Ambroceo,
Richard Davidowitz and Chris O'Shell. Hanbury led the next 12 laps
until Richard Davidowitz dove to the inside for the lead coming off
turn two. The two cars made contact with Hanbury spinning out of the
lead.
All of the leaders headed to pit road under this caution
with Chris O'Shell electing to stay out behind the Chevrolet pace car.
O'Shell led the field to the restart on lap 42 over Matthew Wells, Ryan
Curran, Richie Coy and Dennis Frates.
NPGPro.com Pole sitter
Richie Coy had worked his way back up to the second position after an
earlier pit stop and was all over the back bumper of race leader Chris
O'Shell as he led to the KING Design Halfway lap on lap 50 over Coy,
Andrew Hannula, Bobby Ambroceo and Ryan Curran. Sixth through tenth
were Rick Dutra, Chris Rogers, Mike House, JD Laird and Justin Strumpf.
The two leaders waged a side-by-side war for the lead until Richie Coy
made the bottom lane work going into turn three on lap 54. As Coy dove
low, Chris O'Shell slipped up the race track, giving up the second and
third spots to Andrew Hannula and Bobby Ambroceo.
Five laps
later, Chris Rogers and Ryan Curran got together in turn two to bring
out the race's sixth caution on lap 59. Richie Coy led to the restart
on lap 65 over Andrew Hannula, Bobby Ambroceo, Rick Dutra and Richard
Davidowitz.
Richie Coy began to open up a half straightaway lead
as Richard Davidowitz worked his way under Andrew Hannula for the
second spot on lap 72. The race's seventh caution would fly for Tony
Hanbury and Bobby Ambroceo as the raced for the fourth and fifth spot.
This
caution erased Coy's lead and he surprisingly headed to pit road as the
rookie Andrew Hannula followed him. Richard Davidowitz led to the
restart on lap 78 over Justin Strumpf, JD Laird, Chris O'Shell and
Matthew Wells. JD Laird ducked under Justin Strumpf for the second
position on lap 84, as Davidowitz saw his lead vanish with a caution on
lap 85 for Andrew Hannula who was having a great run in his debut, only
to see it come to an end against the backstretch wall.
Richard
Davidowitz led to the race's final restart on lap 91 over JD Laird,
Justin Strumpf, Chris O'Shell and Richie Coy. Davidowitz quickly opened
a four car length lead as the rest of the top five raced wheel to wheel
in a battle that brought the fans to their feet. Strumpf worked the low
lane under JD Laird as they raced for the second spot, while Richie Coy
and Chris O'Shell raced side by side for the fourth and fifth positions.
But
they were no match for Richard Davidowitz as he flashed under the
double Sunoco checkered flags for his first victory of the 2009 season
over JD Laird, Justin Strumpf, Chris O'Shell and Richie Coy. Sixth
through tenth were Bobby Ambroceo, Dennis Frates, Matthew Wells, Ryan
Curran and Chris Rogers.
"Seems like whenever I win one of these
things here lately, JD (Laird) is right behind me,” laughed a
happy Richard Davidowitz in victory lane. "I don't know what it is
about these muti-groove tracks, but we won one earlier in the year at
Irwindale and this place drives a lot like it. The car was really good
and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year."
Chris O'Shell
took home the Powerade "Power Move of the Race" Award for his drive to
fourth after starting at the rear of the field. Richie Coy won the
Mends Image Most Laps Led Award and also set the Fastech Race Cars
Bodies Fastest Lap of the Race. Charli Brown took home another Hoosier
Hard Luck Award, which is his third of the season.
Next week,
the Whelen Modified Online Tour heads to the Stafford Motor Speedway
for the Tech-Net Spring Sizzler. Richie Coy continues to hold a 159
point lead over Chris O'Shell, Bobby Ambroceo, Charli Brown and Mike
House.
