May 14th, 2009 Richard Davidowitz wins the SAFER Barrier
Project.com 100 at Richmond! -
by Charli Brown
Richard
Davidowitz became the second repeat winner of the 2009 season by winning the
SAFER Barrier Project.com 100 at the Richmond International Raceway, Thursday
night.
Richmond, VA - Holbrook,
New York's Richard Davidowitz became only the second repeat winner of
the 2009 Whelen Modified Online Tour season after dominating the second
half of the SAFER Barrier Project.com 100 Thursday night at the
Richmond International Raceway.
Charli Brown won his first
NPGPro.com Pole Award of 2009 with a lap time of 20.969 seconds at
128.761 Miles Per Hour. Chris O'Shell was second fastest followed by
Corey Riley, Richie Coy and AJ Griffin.
Brown led the field to
the final green flag of the 2009 Spring Season and led the first lap
before waving Chris O'Shell by as they raced down the backstretch on
lap two. Corey Riley followed O'Shell's silver TRD Camry past Charli
Brown who dropped back to the third spot.
Chris O'Shell led the
next eight laps before giving up the top spot to Corey Riley, who dove
to the bottom of turn one to take the lead on lap ten. Riley led the
next five laps before the first caution of the day came out on lap
fifteen for Scott Bryant who grenaded a motor on the backstretch.
Race
Leader Corey Riley led the field to pit road for the first round of pit
stops as the fourth place car of Richie Coy stayed out behind the
Chevrolet pace car to lead lap 17. Chris O'Shell's TRD team got him off
pit road first followed by Cory Riley, Tony Hanbury, Richard Davidowitz
and Matthew Wells.
Coy's Stewart's Grape Soda team rolled the
dice and stayed out to lead the field to the restart on lap 21 over
Bobby Ambroceo (who also stayed out under this caution) Chris O'Shell,
Corey Riley and Tony Hanbury. Sixth was Richard Davidowitz, followed by
Matthew Wells, Zach Truesdail, Mike House and Doug Beaulieu rounding
out the top 10.
The night's first big incident came after a
restart on lap 27 as Chris O'Shell and Bobby Ambroceo were racing hard
for the second spot off turn four. The two cars made contact, with
Ambroceo's car taking a hard right turn into the SAFER barrier and
bouncing back into the path of Richard Davidowitz. Corey Riley spun
through the grass to miss Davidowitz as four other cars were also
involved, with everyone finally driving away.
Richie Coy led to the following restart on lap 34 over Zach Truesdail, Matthew Wells, AJ Griffin and Doug Beaulieu.
The
race's fourth caution flew on lap 41 for Keith Joseph and Doug Beaulieu
coming together in turn three as they were racing for the seventh
position.
Surprisingly, none of the leaders chose to pit under
this caution as Richie Coy continued to hold the lead over Zach
Truesdail, Matthew Wells, Charli Brown and AJ Griffin. Richard
Davidowitz had charged his way back up to the sixth spot over Chris
O'Shell, Bobby Ambroceo, Corey Riley and Mike House.
Zach
Truesdail made his move under Richie Coy for the lead on the lap 45
restart as the two raced to turn one. Three laps later, Charli
Brown dove under Coy's fading machine to take the second position and
set off after race leader Zach Truesdail on lap 48.
Truesdail led to the KING Design
Halfway Leader Award over Charli Brown, Richard Davidowitz, Richie Coy
and Chris O'Shell. Matthew Wells was sixth, followed by Bobby Ambroceo,
Corey Riley, AJ Griffin and Mike House.
Corey Riley's night came
to an end on lap 52 when he spun hard into the turn two SAFER Barrier
to bring out the race's fifth caution. Riley retired his Lance Snacks
machine with heavy rear end damage as he pulled behind the pit wall.
Race
leader Zach Truesdail was the lone duck to stay out behind the
Chevrolet pace car as the rest of the leaders headed to pit road for
service on lap 54. Richard Davidowitz won the race off pit road
followed by Charli Brown, Chris O'Shell, Richie Coy and Mike House.
The
final lead change of the night took place on the lap 64 restart as
Richard Davidowitz worked the high lane around Zach Truesdail as the
two raced to turn one. Bobby Ambroceo worked his way around Charli
Brown for the third spot two laps later and set off after second place
car of Zach Truesdail. It would only take Bobby Ambroceo four laps to
catch Zach Truesdail and move into the second spot as the two raced to
turn one on lap 69.
Race leader Richard Davidowitz had a
straightaway lead over Bobby Ambroceo, Zach Truesdail, Charli Brown and
Chris O'Shell as lap 75 clicked off the scoreboard.
Chris
O'Shell moved into the fourth spot as he dove under Charli Brown in
turn three on lap 85. Brown then lost the fifth spot just three laps
later as AJ Griffin passed Brown's car, which was visibly fading off
the pace. Chris O'Shell dove under Zach Truesdail
for third as the two raced to turn three. Truesdail's bid for
a top five went up in fumes on lap 92 as he coasted to pit road after
running out of fuel just eight laps short from the finish.
The
race's final caution came out on lap 94 as Charli Brown's engine
finally let go halfway down the backstretch after an exciting
side-by-side battle with Matthew Wells for the fifth spot.
Richard
Davidowitz cruised under the double Sunoco checkered flags to win over
Bobby Ambroceo, Chris O'Shell, AJ Griffin and Matthew Wells. Sixth
through tenth were Doug Beaulieu, Mike House, Ryan Curran, Rich Warden
and Philip Ellis, Sr.
Race winner Richard Davidowitz took home
the Powerade "Power Move of the Race" Award for his drive from the
sixteenth starting spot, as well as the Mends Image Most Laps Led
Award. Matthew Wells earned the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award
and Scott Bryant set the Fastech Race Car Bodies Fastest Lap of the
Race. Corey Riley won the Hoosier Hard Luck Award.
Richie Coy
continues to hold a 156 point lead over Chris O'Shell, Bobby Ambroceo,
Charli Brown and AJ Griffin as the Whelen Modified Online Tour gets
it's first week off before the ten race summer season, which begins at
the Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, Vermont on May 29th.
