May 28th, 2009 Chris O'Shell wins the Mekkelsen RV 100 at
Thunder Road! - by Charli Brown
Chris
O'Shell won his second Whelen Modified Online Tour event of 2009 at the Mekkelsen RV 100
at the Thunder Road Speedbowl, Thursday
night.
Barre, VT - Cornelius, North Carolina's
Chris O'Shell won his second Whelen Modified Online Tour event of the 2009
season after making a daring late race pass for the lead in lapped traffic to
win the Mekkelsen RV 100 at the Thunder Road Speedbowl, Thursday
night.
Current point leader Richie Coy set fast time to win his fifth
NPGPro.com Pole Award with a lap time of 11.775 seconds at 76.433 Miles Per
Hour. Keith Joseph posted his best qualifying effort of the year to come home
second fastest, followed by Joe Doiron, Zach Truesdail and Philip Ellis,
Sr.
Pole
sitter Richie Coy would get the early jump and lead the field into turn
one at the drop of the green flag as Joe Doiron snuck inside Keith
Joseph for the second spot, followed by Zach Truesdail, Philip Ellis,
Sr. and Justin Stumpf.
Two early cautions for Philip Ellis, Sr.
and AJ Griffin slowed the field until the race's third caution flew for
Ryan Curran on lap 24. Race leader Richie Coy headed to pit road for
service under this caution while Joe Doiron stayed out and led the
field to the restart on lap 30 over Zach Truesdail, Justin Strumpf,
Charli Brown and Matthew Wells.
Joe Doiron led the next 20 laps
to the KING Design Halfway Leader Award at lap 50 over Justin Strumpf,
Charli Brown, Rick Dutra and Chris O'Shell. Sixth was Richie Coy,
followed by Bobby Ambroceo, Scott Bryant, Matthew Wells and Mike House.
Four
laps later, the race's fifth caution would fly for Zach Truesdail and
Philip Ellis, Sr. getting together in turn three on lap 54.
Race
leader Joe Doiron stayed out behind the Chevrolet pace car under this
caution while the rest of the leaders behind him headed to pit road for
service. Richie Coy, Scott Bryant, Mike House and Keith Joseph also
stayed out to inherit the top five positions.
Chris O'Shell won
the race off pit road, followed by Charli Brown, Justin Strumpf,
Matthew Wells and Rick Dutra. Chris O'Shell lined up in the sixth
position as the first car on fresh tires for the restart on lap 60.
Joe
Doiron continued to hold off Richie Coy for the lead while the cars on
fresher tires began to work their way forward through the field. The
race's seventh caution would fly on lap 78 for Keith Joseph and Mike
House getting together in turn one while racing for the fifth and sixth
positions.
This would bunch the field up for another restart on
lap 84 with Joe Doiron leading over Richie Coy, Chris O'Shell, Justin
Strumpf and Charli Brown. AJ Griffin lined up sixth, followed by
Matthew Wells, Scott Bryant, Keith Joseph and Mike House.
Chris
O'Shell's fresher tires began to show its advantage as he dove under
Richie Coy for the second spot as the two raced down the backstretch on
lap 84. Coy continued to hold the high line as Justin Strumpf worked
the bottom lane and the two drivers waged a side by side war for the
third position on lap 85.
Justin Strumpf cleared Richie Coy for
third three laps later on lap 88 and as Charli Brown began his charge
under Coy's machine in turn one, the two made contact in turn two
sending Coy’s Stewart's Root Beer machine hard into the jersey
barriers outside of turn two to bring out the race's final caution.
Joe
Doiron led to the race's final restart on lap 94 over Chris O'Shell,
Justin Strumpf, Charli Brown and Matthew Wells. Chris O'Shell started
working the lower groove as the leaders came up on the lapped car of
Keith Joseph as they entered turn three.
Joe Doiron moved up a
half lane which opened the door for Chris O'Shell and the two raced
side by side for the lead for the next three laps until O'Shell cleared
Doiron for the lead in turn three on lap 97. Justin Strumpf dove under
Joe Doiron for the second spot as they raced off turn four and cleared
Doiron's fading machine as they raced back to turn one.
Chris
O'Shell flashed under the double Sunoco checkered flags for his second
win of the 2009 season over Justin Strumpf, Joe Doiron, Matthew Wells
and Charli Brown. Sixth through tenth were Rick Dutra, AJ Griffin,
Scott Bryant, Keith Joseph and Mike House.
Chris O'Shell won the
Powerade "Power Move of the Race" Award for his drive from the
eighteenth starting position and Scott Bryant won the Featherlite Most
Improved Driver Award. Joe Doiron took home the Mends Image Most Laps
Led Award, while Richie Coy set the Fastech Race Car Bodies Fastest Lap
of the Race. After the hard hit with the turn two jersey barriers,
Richie Coy earned the Hoosier Hard Luck Award.
Next week, the
Whelen Modified Online Tour heads to the Nazareth Speedway for the
Service Electric 100. Richie Coy continues to hold a 102 point lead
over Chris O'Shell, Charli Brown, Bobby Ambroceo and AJ Griffin.
