Justin Trombley wins the Jennerstown 350! - by Charli Brown
Justin Trombley led 193 of the scheduled 350 laps to win the inaugural Jennerstown 350 Saturday night.
Jennerstown, PA - After
a week-long qualifying format and thirty of the highest caliber drivers
online all trying to earn their way into the longest event ever held at
SIModified.com, twenty-four year old Justin Trombley of Brewer, Maine
led 193 of the 350 scheduled race laps to win the inaugural Jennerstown 350 over
Richie Coy and Richard Davidowitz.
Trombley started the night on
a good note by winning the Bud Light Pole Award which was presented by
Dutchess Beer Distributors of Hudson Valley, New York with a lap time
of 18.466 at 101.765 MPH. Second quick was Timmy Solomito, with Richard
Davidowitz, Scott Bryant and Charli Brown rounding out the top five.
"I
was really shocked to get the pole for this race" explained an excited
Justin Trombley. "There are some really fast guys here. But hey, I'll
take it. The qualifying procedure was something I had never done
before. I liked it but I think heat races would have been great for an
event like this, next time." he added.
Twenty-five of the
twenty-eight cars qualified for the event took the green as Justin
Trombley would lead from the pole. Everyone knew from a well organized
driver's meeting that this would be a long event and the first caution
did not fly until lap 53 for a two car incident involving JD Babbitt
and Steve Meadors, who were racing for the sixth and seventh spot.
This
brought the first round of pit stops with all the lead lap cars pitting
for fresh Hoosier tires and Sunoco racing fuel. Trombley would win the
race off pit road and lead the field to the restart on lap 59 with
Richard Davidowitz second followed by Timmy Solomito, Richie Coy and
Charli Brown rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Jay
Neels, Randy Mahlum, Joshua Guiher, Jerry Lepage and Michael Pares, Jr.
The
second caution of the event was thrown on lap 66 for a single car
incident involving JD Laird who spun his Rockstar Energy machine in
turn two. Scott Bryant took evasive action and missed Laird who
rejoined at the tail end of the field for the lap 72 restart.
But
the field would only complete another ten laps before caution number
three was thrown on lap 76 for another single car incident. This time,
Joe Doucette spun his RacerJoe special in turn two but avoided any
contact and rejoined at the tail end of the line for the lap 82 restart.
Trombley
would continue to set the pace as there was no change in the running
order except for Randy Mahlum working his way past Jay Neels for sixth
before the previous caution. "My intention going into the event was to
ride it out and stay out of trouble until the last 100 laps" explained
Trombley.
Turn two would again bite another driver as Jerry
Solomito would spin on lap 92 and bring out the race's fourth yellow
while Brad Cornthwaite would barely miss Solomito's spinning car.
The
second round of pit stops occurred under this yellow with Trombley
again leading the field to pit road while fifth place driver Charli
Brown and seventh place driver Jay Neels elected to stay out.
"Tire wear was looking really good after our first stop, and I felt we
could have gone another 50 or so laps on the tires we had so I made the
call to stay out" explained Brown.
Joshua Guiher would take two
tires and beat the rest of the field off pit road followed by Trombley,
Davidowitz and Richie Coy who all took four tires.
Brown would
lead the field to the lap 98 restart with Jay Neels second, Joe
Doucette third and Joshua Guiher fourth who had the rest of the cars on
four tires behind him.
The fifth caution of the evening flew on
lap 102 for contact between Timmy Solomito and JD Laird as they were
racing for fifteenth and sixteenth position. Solomito had just suffered
a speeding violation on pit road during the previous round of pit stops
and was trying to work his way forward past Laird after losing the
seventh spot.
Brown would lead the field to the lap 106 restart
with Jay Neels right behind. But Neels would save his Original Pizza
Logs machine from a big wiggle off turn two just two laps later and
lose two positions to Guiher and Trombley and settled back into fourth
spot until the sixth caution on lap 114 for Jerry Solomito who again
fell victim to turn two.
Under this caution, Joshua Guiher would inherit the lead as Brown, Neels and Randy Mahlum would hit pit road for service.
The
race would retake the green flag on lap 119 with Joshua Guiher leading
over Justin Trombley, Richard Davidowitz, Richie Coy and Jerry Lepage.
Sixth through tenth were Scott Bryant, JD Babbitt, Joe Doucette, Chuck
Darling and Michael Pares, Jr.
Guiher would lead the next
twenty-seven laps until a big wiggle off turn two caused him to lose
the controls of his TSW Evolution machine and come to a rest against
the inside concrete wall on lap 146. This would hand the lead back to
Justin Trombley. Guiher would right his machine and attempt to continue
but pulled his car behind the wall two laps later and retire from the
event.
At the 150 lap mark, Trombley would continue to show the
way over Davidowitz, Richie Coy, Jerry Lepage and Scott Bryant. JD
Babbitt was sixth, followed by Chuck Darling, JD Laird, Jay Neels and
Charli Brown.
SIModified.com Turkey Derby champion Richard
Davidowitz would make his bid for the lead on lap 164 as he dove to the
inside of Justin Trombley as the two raced to turn one. Four laps later
the seventh yellow for the evening would fly for Mat Benjamin spinning
his machine in turn 3 in a single car incident.
All the lead lap
cars would pit under this caution for service with Davidowitz
winning the race off pit road over Trombley, Coy, Lepage and Bryant.
Chuck Darling would come out sixth followed by JD Laird, Randy Mahlum,
JD Babbitt, Jay Neels and Danny Coral.
Davidowitz led the field
to the lap 174 restart and would also lead the halfway lap, one lap
later. But the eighth caution would fly on lap 176 for contact between
the ninth and tenth place cars of JD Babbitt and Jay Neels in turn four.
Davidowitz
continued to show the way to the lap 182 restart as the race worked its
way towards its latter stages. The ninth caution would fly for Joe
Doucette spinning in turn one in another single car incident on lap 185.
The
following restart on lap 191 would only get the drivers a half lap as
Danny Coral seemed to forget where his accelerator was as Charli Brown
made a move to the inside for ninth as the two raced to turn one.
Coral's abrupt stop caught Michael Pares, Jr. off guard and Pares, Jr.
spun his TAS Country Homes machine in turn one to avoid the slowing
Coral.
This would be the race's tenth caution but also a preview
of what was to come. Richie Coy hit pit road from sixth spot and took
on left side tires and was the only car to pit under this caution. Coy
rejoined the field as the last car on the lead lap in fifteenth as the
field came to the retart on lap 197.
At lap 200, Richard
Davidowitz continued to lead over Justin Trombley, Jerry Lepage and
Scott Bryant. JD Laird was sixth, followed by Chuck Darling, Randy
Mahlum, Charli Brown and JD Babbitt.
The eleventh caution flew
just one lap later for Kevin Kelleher and Michael Pares, Jr. coming
together in turn three. Pares, Jr. got the worst end of the contact and
slammed hard into the third turn wall. Under this caution, Danny Coral
hit pit road with Kevin Kelleher and Brad Cornthwaite in tow.
Davidowitz
led the field to the lap 207 restart and would lead the next two laps
to the race's twelfth caution for Jim Rasmussen's spin in turn two.
Chuck Darling hit pit road during this caution period and gave up the
sixth spot for four fresh tires.
Again, another stop and go
restart occurred on lap 215 and 216 as Chuck Darling would try to make
a move on Kevin Kelleher on the restart heading into turn one. Both
cars would head to pit road to survey the damage and rejoin at the tail
of the field as the race went back to green on lap 221.
Richard
Davidowitz would lead the next twenty-nine laps incident free and take
the field into the final hundred laps over Justin Trombley, Jerry
Lepage, JD Laird and Scott Bryant. Sixth through tenth were Randy
Mahlum, Charli Brown, Jay Neels, Richie Coy and JD Babbitt. "It was not
my intention at all to lead nearly that many laps” explained
Davidowitz. "I saw that I was faster then Trobley on the long run so I
took my chance while I had it."
Fifteen laps later at lap 265
Jim Rasmussen would spin his General Electric machine in turn four to
bring out the race's fourteenth caution. This would lead to the final
round of pit stops for all the leaders and would totally change the
complexion of the race's running order.
Davidowitz would win the
race off pit road with a four tire change over Justin Trombley and hold
the lead until race officials deemed that the P.O.S. Performance
machine had been caught with a speeding violation. This would send the
race leader to the tail end of the longest line. Meanwhile, Richie Coy
and his Mach-1 Performance team called for a two tire stop and moved
their driver up into the third position. "I guess my move of the race
was the last pit stop” explained Richie Coy. “I decided to
try something a little different and only took right side tires. I had
pitted the caution earlier and took only left sides, so I was pretty
sure I would have enough tire left to finish decent" Coy would inherit
second after Davidowitz's speeding penalty which moved Scott Bryant to
third, JD Laird to fourth and Jerry Lepage fifth. Sixth was Charli
Brown, followed by Randy Mahlum, JD Babbiit, Jay Neels and Chuck
Darling. Davidowitz had a long road to go after starting the lap 271
restart from the thirteenth position.
The race's final caution
would fly less than a lap later for contact between Jay Neels and JD
Babbitt as the two raced for the eighth and ninth positions heading
into turn three.
This would set up the race's final restart on
lap 277. Trombley continued to lead the way over Coy, Bryant and JD
Laird. But Laird's night would come to a heart breaking end just eight
laps later on lap 285 while running in the third position. JD had just
passed Scott Bryant for the third spot a few laps earlier and headed to
pit road with an engine misfire in his Rockstar Energy machine. Laird
would lose ten laps on pit road while his crew tried to diagnose the
problem.
Justin Trombley on the other hand began pulling away
from the field and at lap 300 held a commanding lead over Richie Coy,
Scott Bryant, Charli Brown and Jerry Lepage. Sixth was Randy Mahlum
followed by Richard Davidowitz (who was carving through the field with
an awesome display of racing in traffic), Chuck Darling, JD Babbitt and
Danny Coral.
As the race's winding laps trickled down,
Davidowitz was the only car going forward. He made his move on Randy
Mahlum on lap 309 for fifth as the two raced to turn one then set off
after the fourth place car of Charli Brown.
It took him thirty
laps, but Davidowitz caught Brown and dove under him on lap 339 as
the two raced to turn three. Two laps later and Randy Mahlum would also
work his way past the slowly faltering Nitorade sponsored machine as he
dropped Brown to sixth.
Davidowitz's last move came on the last
corner of the last lap. As Justin Trombley had already taken the
checkered flags and Richie Coy was crossing the start-finish line,
Davidowitz dove to the inside of Scott Bryant in turn three and rubbed
wheels with the black number sixty car taking away the third spot as
the two raced off turn four.
Bryant on the other hand, was
trying to regain control of his car as Randy Mahlum raced him to the
line in a photo finish for fourth and fifth spot. Mahlum would get the
spot, dropping Bryant back to fifth at the checkers.
The top ten
for the Jennerstown 350 were Justin Trombley, Richie Coy, Richard
Davidowitz, Randy Mahlum and Scott Bryant fifth. Sixth was Charli
Brown, followed by Chuck Darling, JD Babbitt and Jerry Lepage who was
the last car on the lead lap. Finishing tenth one lap down was Danny
Coral.
The race had seven lead changes among five different
drivers and had fifteen caution flags for seventy-five laps. Justin
Trombley led the most laps with 193, while Richard Davidowitz took home
the Halfway Leader Award.
