Richard Davidowitz wins the Richie Evans Memorial 100 Friday night at New Smyrna! - by Charli Brown
Richard Davidowitz made a late race charge on fresh tires to win the "Richie Evans Memorial 100" Friday night at New Smyrna.
Samsula, FL - Holbrook,
New York's Richard Davidowitz won his second feature of New Smyrna
Speedweek last night in his P.O.S. Performance Troyer Corvette with an
exciting late race charge from the rear of the field.
Timmy
Solomito continues to be the king of qualifying by winning his third
pole of the week with a lap time of 16.181 seconds at 111.241 MPH in
his Nicolock Pavers Troyer Corvette. Davidowitz was again second quick
and would start from the outside pole.
But the driver who stole
the spotlight started third. Charlotte, North Carolina's Charli Brown
has had a difficult week aboard his Bear Motorsports/Shark Lounge
Cavalier but showed promising speed in practice and qualifying and
looked to be a threat for the win.
Brown would work his way past
Davidowitz for second on a lap 22 restart and would set off after
leader Timmy Solomito. The veteran stalked the young hot shoe for
several laps and brought the fans to their feet with a side by side
battle for the lead that Brown eventually stole on lap 37.
Solomito
quickly began to lose positions as his tires started to fade as he rode the high lane. Richard
Davidowitz would follow Brown past Solomito for second with PJ
Stergios racing Solomito side by side for third, before finally working
his way past two laps later as the drivers raced to turn three.
Pit strategy
was going to play a major key in tonight's event as everyone knew the
tires would not go the 100 lap distance. The caution everybody was
waiting for finally flew on lap 47 as Tom Meade had hard contact with the turn
four wall and collected Chris Rogers, Shawn Breitzman, Rick Dutra and
Joshua Guiher in a huge melee on the front stretch.
All the
leaders headed to pit road with Brown leading over PJ Stergios who had
just earned the second spot after a hard fought, side by side battle
with Davidowitz who had dropped back to third.
Brown would win
the race off pit road followed by Stergios and Davidowitz, but Timmy
Solomito (who had held on to fourth spot) was caught speeding on pit
road and would have to go to the tail of the longest line handing the
fifth spot to Charles Buchanan.
Chris Rogers (who had
stayed out) would lead the field to the lap 53 restart, but the leaders
on fresher tires quickly made their way past Rogers' Petro-sponsored #03
machine dropping him back to fifth by the next lap.
Brown
continued to lead over Stergios, Davidowitz, Buchanan and Rogers, while fifth
through tenth were Michael Pares, Jr., Andy Ticco, Timmy Solomito,
Shawn Breitzman and Chris O'Shell.
But the moment that totally changed the complexion of the race happened on lap 84.
PJ
Stergios had pitted on a lap 76 caution from third spot and took on
his second set of tires and was quickly moving his way forward through
the field before catching the two leaders who were nose to tail on lap
83.
But as the top three cars raced off turn two on the very next lap, Stergios
made slight contact with the back of Davidowitz's car sending him into
a spin that would bring out the race's seventh caution.
Stergios would heed the
penalty and restart at the tail of the longest line, but both cars
would hit pit road for fresh tires and rejoin the field in eighth and
ninth spots, respectively.
The race's final restart would come
with 10 laps to go with Brown leading Charles Buchanan, Shawn
Breitzman, Chris O'Shell and Michael Pares, Jr. Sixth through tenth
were Andy Ticco, Chris Rogers, Richard Davidowitz, PJ Stergios and Rick
Dutra.
Davidowitz immediately began working the outside groove
as he started to pick off positons by the lap. He finally made it to
second past Charles Buchanan with five to go and set off after the
leader who held a half straightaway lead.
The two leaders waged
a three lap, side by side war for the lead with Brown on the low side
and Davidowitz upstairs. Davidowitz would clear Brown with three to go
and set off towards the checkered flag.
Brown would come home
second with PJ Stergios third, Chris O'Shell fourth and Michael Pares,
Jr. fifth. Sixth through tenth were Andy Ticco, Chris Rogers, Shawn
Breitzman, Charles Buchanan and Rick Dutra.
PJ Stergios
continues to hold onto the Speedweek point lead by 15 points over
Richard Davidoitz and Timmy Solomito. Chris O'Shell is fourth with
Charli Brown in fifth.
Tonight is the final race in the
SIModified New Smyrna Speedweek. Practice will begin at 9 PM EST and
we'll crown our champion of the series after tonight's event.
