Richie
Coy rewrote the record books by winning his sixth straight Whelen Modified Online Tour race at the
CarQuest Tech-Net Spring Sizzler, Wednesday night at the Stafford Motor
Speedway.
Stafford Springs, CT - Haskell,
New Jersey's Richie Coy is rewriting the record books in the
SIModified.com Online Racing Leagues' Whelen Modified Online Tour. Coy
took home his sixth straight win Wednesday night in the CarQuest
Tech-Net Spring Sizzler at the Stafford Motor Speedway to close out the
2008 Spring Season.
He also went 7 for 8 in Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the season by
setting fast time with a 19.450 second lap at 92.545 mph.
At
the drop of the green flag, Coy would quickly get the jump on outside
pole sitter Chris Rogers and lead the field into the final event of the
Spring Season.
The race's first caution came out on lap 5 for
the fourth place car of Rick Dutra, who spun his Francis Farm Clamcakes
machine in turn two in a single car incident. Dutra would pull away
without any damage to his machine and rejoin at the field.
Coy
continued to lead to the lap 11 restart over Chris Rogers, Dennis
Frates, Charli Brown and Jeff Rogers. Brown's fresh set of tires after
pitting under the previous caution quickly moved him past the
third place car for Dennis Frates as the two raced to turn one.
The
race's second caution would fly on lap 14 for Jeff Rogers spinning his
Rooms Unlimited machine in a single car spin in turn one in front of
Rick Dutra, who jumped hard on the binders to narrowly miss hitting
Rogers' spinning car.
Under this caution, Brown again pitted for
another set of tires while being followed down pit road by Dennis
Frates. Brown's NOS Energy Drink team beat Frates' Boehler Racing team
off pit road as the two rejoined the tail end of the line for the
restart on lap 20.
As the green flag came back out, Richie Coy
continued to hold the lead over Chris Rogers, Rick Dutra, Charli Brown
and Dennis Frates. Brown would quickly jump to the outside of Rick
Dutra for third as the two raced to turns one and two and down the back
straightaway. Frates would make his move under Rick Dutra for fourth as
they raced to turn one on the very next lap.
Charli Brown used
the low lane "holeshot" move made famous by Bugsy Stevens as he dove
under Chris Rogers in turns one and two for the second spot on lap 22
and set off after the race leader Richie Coy, who held a six car length
lead.
The race's third caution would come out on lap 28 for Rick
Dutra who would get loose heading into turn one and chase his car up
the race track, but the caution would fly for the spinning car of Jeff
Rogers. Rogers would do a nice 360 and head his car in the right
direction with no contact.
The leaders hit pit road under this
caution with Richie Coy showing the way over Charli Brown, Chris
Rogers, Dennis Frates and Rick Dutra. The Stewart's Root Beer team
would win the race off pit road over Brown, Chris Rogers and Dennis
Frates.
The race's third restart came on lap 33 as Charli Brown
began to apply heavy pressure to the back bumper of Coy's Ford for the
lead but by the Mends Image Halfway Lap, Coy opened a half straightaway
lead over Brown who was beginning to get pressure for the second spot
by Chris Rogers.
Rogers would work his way under Brown for
second as the two raced off turn two on lap 52, as Brown's tires began
to show excessive wear as he struggled to work the high groove and as
he dove into turn one on lap 53 spun in a single car incident to bring
out the race's fourth caution.
Coy's team again got him off pit
road first ahead of Chris Rogers, Dennis Frates and Charli Brown, who
was the last car running on the lead lap as the field came to the lap
59 restart.
Brown again worked his was past Dennis Frates for
third on the restart and chased after Chris Rogers who left the bottom
lane open in turns one and two for another "holeshot" move for second
on lap 66. Brown began making the bottom groove work as he reeled in
race leader Richie Coy and made his second attempt to get past him for
the lead as the leaders clicked off lap 70.
Coy seemed to be
saving a little for the end of the run and he slowly began to pull away
from Brown and Rogers, who resumed their own race for second place.
Brown's tire wear seemed to be his demise as Chris Rogers again worked
his way past him for the second spot on lap 83.
At the double
checkered flags on lap 105, Richie Coy waved to the fans as the winner of the CarQuest Tech-Net Spring Sizzler
by a half straightaway over Chris Rogers, Charli Brown, Dennis Frates
and Jeff Rogers. Rick Dutra would come home sixth as the final car
scored in the event.
With this win, Richie Coy would wrap up the
2008 Whelen Modified Online Tour Spring Season championship by 382
points over Rick Dutra, Michael Pares, Jr., Chris Rogers and Jeff
Rogers. This is Coy's third championship in the SIModified Online
Racing Leagues, and his third consecutive Whelen Modified Online Tour
title.
