Richie Coy dominates the 2008 Whelen Modified Online Tour, wins the Spring Season championship. - By Charli Brown
Richie
Coy dominated the 2008 Whelen Modified Online Tour by winning six races in eight starts to win the Spring Season championship. Charlotte, NC - Richie Coy's 2008 Whelen Modified Online Tour Spring Season can only be defined in one word.
Domination.
Coy's impressive run actually started last fall. After winning the 2007 Fall
Season title on the Whelen Modified Online Tour, Coy had scored enough
points to earn the 2007 Overall Championship and was the only driver to
win a seasonal title and the overall title in the same year.
Coy
won six races in eight starts and also dominated Coors Light Pole
Qualifying by wining seven poles in eight races and qualified third at
the Icebreaker at Thompson International Speedway, meaning he never
qualified outside of the top three all season.
He also led 700 of the total laps run in the season, which averaged out to an amazing 66.1 percent.
Alta
Loma, California's JD Laird was the only other driver to win on the
Tour this spring, as he opened up the season with wins at Caraway and
Southern National Raceway Park, but other commitments kept him away
after the third race of the season at Thompson, opening the door for
Coy to go on his impressive run.
"It's hard to believe when you
sit back and look at all the statistics" commented Coy. "I was just
focused on winning races and scoring as many points as I could, while
being patient enough for the races to come to me when we weren't
leading" he added.
"It's a shame JD (Laird) couldn't run the whole
season with us. I really enjoyed racing with him, Rick (Dutra), Michael
(Pares, Jr.) and the rest of the guys in this division. Hopefully,
everybody can come back in the summer or the fall and give this divison
the boost it really needs."
The 2008 Whelen Modified Online Tour
Summer Season schedule gets scaled back to four races over the summer
and entries are already starting to file in. Coy will have his work cut
out for him if he plans on repeating his championship run.
