JD Laird wins the Maine-ly Action Sports 100 at Oxford Plains! - By Charli Brown

JD Laird won his first True Value/Dart Machinery Modified Series event Thursday night at the Oxford Plains Speedway.

Oxford, ME - Alta Loma, California’s JD Laird bounced back from controversy following the Whelen Modified Online Tour's inaugural visit to Iowa Speedway last week and won the Maine-ly Action Sports 100 at the Oxford Plains Speedway, Thursday night in only his second start in the True Value/Dart Machinery Modified Series.

2008 Spring Season champion Zach Truesdail set fast time and won the Dart Heads Pole Award with a lap time of 15.774 seconds at 85.584 miles per hour with PJ Stergios making his second appearance of the season and qualifying on the outside pole.

Truesdail got the early jump at the green flag and beat Stergios to turn one to grab the early lead. Chris O'Shell moved under Stergios from his fourth starting position and jumped into second as Tony Hanbury and JD Laird put on a great side by side battle for the fifth spot in the race's early stages.

With the first ten laps in the books, Zach Truesdail led over PJ Stergios, (who got back by Chris O'Shell for second on lap six) Chris O'Shell, Charli Brown and JD Laird. Sixth through tenth were Scott Aldrich, Tony Hanbury, Bobby Ambroceo, Jeff Rogers and Jeff Marble.

PJ Stergios made his bid for the lead as he dove under Zach Truesdail as the two raced off turn four to complete lap 19, but six laps later Truesdail passed Stergios back for the lead as Charli Brown worked his way under Chris O'Shell for the third spot as the two raced off turn two on lap 25.

The race's first caution for contact came out as JD Laird was making a move under Chris O'Shell for the fourth spot as Laird tried to follow Charli Brown past O'Shell's fading machine. Laird and O'Shell rubbed nerf bars, which sent O'Shell's EARLE Asphalt machine spinning up and over the berm outside of turn three.

Under this caution, PJ Stergios, Charli Brown and Jeff Marble hit pit road for service while Zach Truesdail stayed out to lead over Scott Aldrich, Tony Hanbury, Bobby Ambroceo and Dennis Frates. Sixth through tenth were Mike House, Jeff Rogers, Rick Dutra, Jeff Marble and PJ Stergios.

Truesdail led the restart on lap 31 and continued to hold the top spot for the next seven laps until the race's fourth caution for contact on lap 38 for Mike House getting into the back of Jeff Rogers as Rogers bounced off the curb as he exited turn two with the field scattering behind them to miss Rogers' spinning car.

With 40 laps on the board, Zach Truesdail continued to lead over Scott Aldrich, Tony Hanbury, Dennis Frates and Jeff Marble. Sixth through tenth were Rick Dutra, PJ Stergios, JD Laird, Bobby Ambroceo and Rich Warden.

At the KING Design Halfway Leader lap, Zach Truesdail led over Scott Aldrich, Tony Hanbury, Dennis Frates and Jeff Marble. The race's sixth caution would fly one lap later for Rick Underwood spinning in a single car incident in turn two.

Scott Aldrich and Dennis Frates gave up the second and fourth positions respectively as they hit pit road for service under this caution handing the second spot to Tony Hanbury with Jeff Marble, PJ Stergios and JD Laird rounding out the top five.

Truesdail led the field to the green on lap 56 and held the top spot to the race's seventh caution for Scott Aldrich making contact with Jeff Rogers while Rogers was racing Bobby Ambroceo for the seventh spot in turn three just two laps after the race went back to green.

Five laps later after a "quickie yellow" Zach Truesdail continued to hold the lead over Tony Hanbury, Jeff Marble, PJ Stergios and JD Laird. Sixth through tenth were Rick Dutra, Bobby Ambroceo, Chris O'Shell, Dennis Frates and Charli Brown.

At lap 70, Truesdail held a four-car length lead over the race for second that included Tony Hanbury, PJ Stergios and Jeff Marble racing three wide off turn four. Marble would get the spot heading into turn one with JD Laird muscling his was past Tony Hanbury for third while PJ Stergios continued to work the high lane and take the fourth spot as the group of cars raced off turn two and down the backstretch. Hanbury would lose two more spots to Chris O'Shell and Dennis Frates before settling into the seventh position.

The ninth caution of the evening flew on lap 76 for Jeff Rogers spinning in turn three. In a surprising turn of events, race leader Zach Truesdail gave up the lead and headed to pit road for four fresh tires and fuel handing the lead to Jeff Marble. Tony Hanbury also headed to pit road for service giving up the sixth position.

Jeff Marble led the field to the final restart of the night on lap 88 over JD Laird, PJ Stergios, Chris O'Shell and Dennis Frates. Laird quickly made his move under Jeff Marble for the lead as the two raced to turn one and by the time the leaders crossed the Start/Finish line to complete lap 89 the race had seen its final lead change of the night.

With ten laps to go JD Laird held a car length lead over PJ Stergios, Jeff Marble, Chris O'Shell and Dennis Frates. Sixth through tenth were Charli Brown, Zach Truesdail, Tony Hanbury, Rick Dutra and Mike House.

Laird looked to be on cruise control as the race behind him started to heat up. Jeff Marble starting applying heavy pressure to the back of Stergios' machine for the second spot and with five laps to go had moved into second while moving PJ Stergios to the high lane. Chris O'Shell moved under Stergios and raced wheel to wheel with him for the third spot with three laps to go.

Stergios had visibly lost the handle on his Eight Ball Properties machine and was stuck on the high lane as Dennis Frates made his move for fourth spot on the very next lap. Stergios quickly slammed the door on the sixth place car of Charli Brown, hoping to salvage a top five finish as JD Laird took the "Twin Popsicle Sticks" signaling two laps to go.

The race for sixth, seventh and eighth place had the fans on their feet as Charli Brown was trying to hold off the two cars on fresher tires of Zach Truesdail and Tony Hanbury. Hanbury worked the high lane on Truesdail earlier and was looking for a way past Brown's Troyer Engineering machine as the field headed to the white flag. Truesdail tried the high lane going into one and made the cross over move work as he raced under Tony Hanbury heading into turn three. Brown tried to dive inside Stergios for fifth, which bunched the group up as they headed to turn one as they raced past the white flag.

Brown, Hanbury and Stergios were three wide heading into turn one with Truesdail giving chase. Brown made the bottom groove work and took the fifth spot as they headed down the backstretch for the final time. Hanbury cleared Stergios for sixth but Zach Truesdail made a last ditch effort inside Hanbury's Kolba Construction machine as they raced to turn three.

Zach Truesdail tried to thread the needle inside Hanbury coming off turn four while getting a monster run to try and beat Charli Brown to the line for the fifth spot. Brown and Truesdail's cars were dead even at the line, with Truesdail getting the fifth spot according to official timing and scoring.

JD Laird came across the line first followed by Jeff Marble, Chris O'Shell, Dennis Frates and Zach Truesdail. Sixth through tenth were Charli Brown, Tony Hanbury, PJ Stergios, Bobby Ambroceo and Scott Aldrich.

Next week, the True Value/Dart Machinery Modified Series makes its first visit to the Langley Field Speedway in Hampton, Virginia for the B&C Seafood 100.

Charli Brown continues to lead the series point standings by just 10 points over Jeff Marble, Zach Truesdail, Chris O'Shell and Tony Hanbury.
